Dubai Has Started Building The Tallest Tower In The World [PHOTOS]

United Arab Emirates city, Dubai has begun construction work on a tower that is set to be the tallest in the world.

On Monday, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, led the groundbreaking of The Tower, which will become the world’s tallest tower when completed in 2020. The joint venture between Emaar Properties and Dubai Holding, the investment vehicle of the Emirate’s ruler, will be located at Dubai Creek Harbour.

Both the exact height of the tower and the cost of production have not yet been released.

The country already has the tallest skyscraper in the world in the Burj Khalifa which is an amazing 829.8 metres (2,722ft) high but this new tower according to Spanish-Swiss architect, Santiago Calatrava Valls who will be designing it will be “a notch” higher than the Burj Khalifa and will have observation decks providing a 360-degree view of the city.

In April, Emaar Properties said the tower will be slender, evoking the image of a minaret, and will be anchored to the ground with sturdy cables. “The Tower will re-define the nation’s already spectacular skyline,” Emaar Properties said in a statement. “(It will) strengthen the UAE’s reputation for innovation and excellence in architecture, engineering and construction and will eclipse even Burj Khalifa as the tallest building in the world.”
